The Dripping Springs High School Destination Imagination Team, coached by DSHS parent Jennifer Timm, is headed to the state finals for the third consecutive year after a strong showing at the DI Regional Tournament in Leander on Saturday, February 27, 2010. The team placed second in the “Breaking DI News” challenge, and first in the DI eXtreme event. “Breaking DI News” was an engineering and design-focused challenge that required teams to design, build, and test a structure made only of newsprint and glue, aiming for a structure that “holds the most and weighs the least,” re-using a story about a newsworthy event in another nation. Teams had to reduce the props and scenery for their presentation to fit inside a 30” x 23” x 48” container. In addition, they had to recycle newsprint by using it creatively in a costume or prop. Team member Erin Lulfs was awarded a Renaissance Award for her stunning ball gown made from newspaper. In the DI eXtreme Challenge, where teams pit their creativity, teamwork, and problem solving skills against the clock in an on-the-spot challenge, the DSHS team bested all comers to take first place. Since the same DI eXtreme challenge is used throughout the country, and other tournaments are still taking place, details of the team’s winning performance have not been released at this time. Destination Imagination state finals will take place on April 17th in the Dallas area. More information about Destination Imagination is available at http://www.idodi.org. [Additional info...]

The Dripping Springs Tiger Swim Team was one of the first teams to arrive at the UIL 4A State Swim Meet held at the Jamail Swimming Center on the University of Texas campus on February 26-27, 2010, and for good reason. All of the qualifying members scored big points, resulting in an outstanding meet - Dripping Springs swimmers, as a combined team of boys and girls, finished 13th overall in the state, out of more than 400 schools in the 4A classification. Athletic Director Howard Ballard said, “The swimmers were focused and determined as they hit the water, setting one school record after another. Coach Andrea McCarthy had the team rested and prepared, and it showed. The coach and the team did a fantastic job!” The girls’ medley relay led off the meet as they finished 13th in a school record time of 1:56.92. The relay team consisted of junior Ellen McCarthy swimming backstroke, followed by sophomore Jessica Shepard in the breaststroke, sophomore Kaitlyn Thewes in the butterfly, and senior Morgan Emmons swimming the freestyle leg. The boys’ medley relay ramped up the Tiger scoring spree with 24 points and a 7th place finish with a time of 1:39.79. Sophomore Timothy Wylie swam the backstroke leg with Ben Shepard (breast stroke), Christian Conway (butterfly), and Cameron Huron (freestyle) completing the team. This was the first relay team in the history of the school to qualify for the championship heat in the state swimming meet. In individual events the Tigers continued to eclipse school marks, and two swimmers became only the second and third swimmers ever to stand on the awards podium for Dripping Springs High School. Timothy Wylie won Dripping Springs’ first-ever individual state gold medal in blasting away the competition in the 100 yard backstroke, setting personal (50.99) and school records along the way. Wylie also captured a bronze medal in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 46.06. Joining Wylie on the podium was Jessica Shepard, earning a bronze medal in the 100 backstroke with her time of 58.19. Shepard doubled in the 200 individual medley and placed 6th with a time of 2:08.63. Shepard’s older brother Ben, a junior, also scored a valuable 13 points for the Tigers with a 6th place in the 100 breaststroke and a time of 1:00.97. The last event of the meet was the 400 freestyle relay, and the team of Ben Shepard, Conway, Huron, and Wylie swam to a fast 3:18.10, scoring 18 critical points in leading the Tiger men’s swimming team to a 9th place finish overall, and the highest finish ever for a program that has been in existence for less than 10 years. DSISD is now accepting applications for providers of Off-Campus Physical Education. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) allows school districts to provide required physical education credit for students participating in off-campus activities that meet state requirements and local policies, but requires them to provide a list of qualified service providers to TEA in advance of offering the credit option to students and parents. DSISD will be accepting applications between now and April 16, 2010 for providers for the 2010-2011 school year. (Current Off-Campus PE providers must re-apply for the new school year.) Applications are available on the DSISD web site at dsisd.txed.net/DocumentView.aspx?DID=5898, or may be obtained in the main offices of Dripping Springs High School and Dripping Springs Middle School. Each year, school districts across the nation are required under provisions of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 to share certain information with parents and the community. This information is known as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Report Card, which contains information including: Assessment results for the district and campuses; graduation rates for high school students; performance of the school district and campuses on NCLB adequately yearly progress (AYP) measures; number and names of Title I schools identified as in need of improvement, including the stage of improvement and AYP indicator missed for any schools identified for improvement; and professional qualifications of teachers in the district and at each campus. In Texas, the assessment results are student scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, or TAKS. The Report Card breaks down student performance on the TAKS into categories including race/ethnicity, gender, disability status, migrant status, English proficiency, and economically disadvantaged, and shows two years of data for each subject and grade tested. “Adequate Yearly Progress” (AYP) measures whether a school is meeting federal targets for continued improvement on state assessments. The district’s 2008-2009 NCLB Report Card shows that all DSISD schools are maintaining a standard of education well above the state and national averages as measured by state assessments. In addition, all schools meet or exceed the requirements for Adequate Yearly Progress. The Report Card is available on the district’s website at http://www.dsisd.txed.net/index.aspx?nid=1965, and will be sent home to all DSISD parents and guardians before March 1, 2010, as required by law. Hard copies of the report are also available at the district office (510 West Mercer Street in Dripping Springs) or from each school’s administrative office. Questions about individual campus information should be directed to the campus principals, while questions concerning district information may be directed to Greg Jung, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction at (512)-858-3040 or greg.jung@dsisd.txed.net. The Child Nutrition staff members of Dripping Springs ISD were honored for their service at the DSISD Board meeting on Thursday, March 11, 2010, for their role in helping to bring good nutrition to the district’s more than 4300 students every day. Superintendent Dr. Mard Herrick presented each staff member with a certificate and a token of appreciation, saying, “We want to thank all of you for the work that you do. One of the biggest factors in how well students do in school is whether they are healthy and well fed, and you are a big part of that.” This recognition comes in conjunction with National Nutrition Month® - a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the American Dietetic Association. The theme for March 2010 is “Nutrition from the Ground Up.” The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The ADA Web site, www.eatright.org/public, offers many tips on building a healthful diet from the ground up, ways to encourage children to try a variety of healthy foods, and other helpful nutrition information that is useful during National Nutrition Month and all year long. The DSISD Child Nutrition program was also awarded a rating of “Excellent” in the Texas Department of Agriculture’s most recent “Coordinated Review Effort” (CRE) of the program, conducted in December 2009. A CRE is an extensive review that looks at the administrative and nutritional aspects of a district’s Child Nutrition program, with the aim of ensuring that it meets or exceeds the standards set by the National School Lunch Program and implemented through the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy. For more information about Texas Public School Nutrition Policy, visit the Web site www.squaremeals.org. [Additional info...]
