Accountability Ratings & Reports
Schools are either designated by the Texas Education Agency as “Met Standard” or “Improvement Required,” based on several factors: student achievement on State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) tests administered each spring, student progress (improvement), success in closing performance gaps, and post-secondary readiness (for districts and high schools only). If any one or more of the targets are missed, the district or campus receives a rating of “Improvement Required.” Campuses have the possibility of earning “distinctions” in three categories: Academic Achievement in Reading/ELA, Academic Achievement in Mathematics, and Top 25 Percent Student Progress. Rather than being compared with all schools statewide in determining if distinctions were earned, campuses were compared with similar campuses, and had to be ranked in the top quartile.
An element that was added to the Texas rating system in 2013 requires districts to develop a method for evaluating themselves as a whole and each individual campus, based on nine criteria: fine arts; wellness and physical education; community and parental involvement; 21st Century Workforce Development program; second language acquisition program; digital learning environment; dropout prevention strategies; educational programs for gifted and talented students; and the record of the district and campus regarding compliance with statutory reporting requirements.
